Ephesus was a very big and wealthy port city. It was very multicultural and a big area for trade. The Mediterranean Sea used to come all the way up to the city but silt has built up and created a huge gap between the sea and land.  There were many scholars, mathematicians, and politicians there, so people came to study, teach, and learn at the library. The city’s main god was Artemis (Diana) which is the goddess of fertility. And many of the items in the city were dedicated to this purpose.
