Aspendos

126_2617

This spectacularly well-preserved theatre is one of the best examples of Roman theatre construction in the world. While there was probably an earlier ancient theatre on the site, it was completely obliterated by the Roman theatre, which was built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD). Divided into three sections, the bottom section was for the rich, the middle section was for the middle class, and the top section was for the poor. Aspendos was a active city and had an aquaduct system, temple, agora, and stadium; although only the theatre is well preserved.
